Member Representatives

Becoming a member representative provides full members with an incredible opportunity to develop their skills, broaden their expertise and build up their strengths as an individual. Being the go-to person for members in their area is extremely rewarding and can make a genuine difference, with the Paramedic Council being able to bring a range of new projects to the table for discussion.

The member representative role is a voluntary position which provides unparalleled professional networking opportunities.

When elections are running, we welcome and encourage full members of all backgrounds to stand as candidates.

2023 Elections

Full members of the College of Paramedics are eligible to stand as a candidate to be a Member Representative when a position becomes available. Candidates are voted on by full members from the region of the open seat(s).

We have candidates standing for seven regions/nation in this current by-election. Their candidate statements can be viewed below. It was only the London position that was contested and required members to vote. However, one of the London candidates has had to withdraw from the by-election for process reasons, so there will be no member vote in these by-elections.

Unfortunately there were no candidates from the South East position prior to the deadline, so we will use the process of co-opting someone into the position until the 2024 elections.

The elections are administered by an independent election service. Votes will be counted using the Single Transferable Vote system, which means second and even third or later choice votes may come into play.

Wales

Bethany Davies

I would like to stand for member representative for Wales. I’ve been a registered paramedic since 2016 and a member of the college of paramedics since 2015 with experience in several healthcare settings including NHS ambulance trust, private sector and hospital settings. I have also acted as a liaison officer for the college of paramedics since 2019.

My current role with NHS Wales as a medical examiner officer frequently requires me to work collaboratively and communicate complex information with different health boards, agencies, and government offices to a wide range of clinicians and staff to senior management level. I have sought the agreement of the lead medical examiner officer for Wales regarding my interest in this post.

I am proud to be a paramedic and I am proud of our profession, where it has been and where we are going in the future thanks to the work of the college for continuing to strive for the recognition our profession deserves. I hold strong personal professional values and continue to maintain my professional development through a range of activities to ensure that I not only provide the best possible care for my patients but also as a representative of our profession, acting as a role model for my colleagues but also as a visible representation of our profession in the public eye.

Paramedics have so much to offer in the wider healthcare system and this is something that I would love to foster and encourage for the future whilst representing the members for Wales at the college and their interests whilst equally promoting the strategic aims and ethos of the college. I love to see people succeed and will often seek out opportunities to help others progress, I believe we are stronger when united and through sharing our experiences and knowledge we can all benefit which in turn facilitates our end goal of providing high quality care to our patients and presenting a skilled and professional profession to the public.

I am fortunate that my current role involves working across Wales and I have an established network of contacts in a range of settings requiring virtual meetings and conferencing on a regular basis. The regular hours and nature of my work will allow me to devote the time and effort needed to fulfil the duties of this role as set out by the college.

I have several paramedic colleagues in support of me representing them, their interests, and the profession, to this end I am willing to work hard to meet their needs and those of the college of paramedics with tenacious enthusiasm with the mindfulness of the responsibility of holding a public office. We all have a responsibility as guardians of our profession that as it continues to grow and develop, that we are passing it to the next generation of paramedics in a better state than when we started. Safeguarding the future of our profession for years to come.

<

I am an Advanced Paramedic in the North West Ambulance Service and currently in the last month of my Masters in Advanced Clinical Practice with Bolton University.

I have been a Paramedic since 2012 after studying Paramedic Science at the University of Portsmouth. Over the last 11 years I have worked in the North West Ambulance Service, spending 3 years as a Paramedic in Central Manchester. Before being promoted to Senior Paramedic and spending 3 years in North Manchester. I am currently in my 4th Year as an Advanced Paramedic working in South Manchester in the city of Stockport.

I have undertaken various roles in my career from special operations, operational commander and senior clinical positions. I have worked in primary care seconded to GP practices. I also work part time as the clinical lead for Hatzola Manchester which is a private volunteer ambulance service that operates in Manchester. As part of my work with Hatzola I recently presented at the College of Paramedics national conference on their transformation success story.

I am a strong advocate for all things Paramedicine and the roles we play in healthcare. I firmly believe in developing the opportunities available for paramedics. Promoting the College of Paramedics and the work they do representing the profession. I would like to be considered for the position of NW Rep as I feel I have a range of experiences that allow me to understand the working lives of Paramedics from different sectors of the industry. I also believe I have adequate experience in both internal and external engagement with other services that I would be able to put that knowledge to good use on behalf of the profession.

North East

Paula Treadwell

I have been a registered paramedic since 2017, during my studies I developed a passion for higher education and continued my journey gaining further qualifications and currently enrolling to complete my MSc in education and advanced practice. My current role is a senior lecturer / practice placement lead at University, which is incredibly rewarding helping students and developing programme contents to ensure the most recent information is delivered. Within this role I have a strong focus on bridging the gap with placement providers, by offering support and further inhouse training. I also continuously strive to introduce bespoke placement opportunities for students to ensure they receive a plethora of varied opportunism. This allows the student to make an informed decision choosing their career pathway, a more details understanding of all aspects of paramedicine and the placement provider understand our current scope of practice. All of which underpins a growing reassurance and confidence within the profession.

In addition to this I also work as an operational Paramedic with North East Ambulance Service. I feel privileged to be able to balance education and my clinical shifts. I believe this holds a golden thread to improve communication and adapt to an evolving role as a paramedic. I have a strong interest within the college and I feel with my experience I can promote the college and reach out to members and future members to continue assist the growth in the future in a positive way.

The role of the paramedic is continuously evolving. I have dedication to focus on continuous professional development, whereby the scope of practice can be reviewed on a regular basis. With positive promotion I thrive to increase knowledge with our extended multi disciplinary teams. A paramedics scope of practice is vast and with this education I believe we have the ability to promote paramedics capabilities and increase employability and training opportunities. I work alongside many teams such as primary care professionals. We are developing a greater awareness and trust within our profession, whereby service providers no longer deem as, ""ambulance drivers""! I have a strong ethos and focus on paramedics and students and I am focused to continue to develop through education and clear, concise communication skills.

As a paramedic I demonstrate many attributes of the 7 principles of public life. I act in a professional way away of our codes and conduct and responsibilities. I am approachable and act with integrity, building trust by listening to our members and demonstrating an understanding of their needs, objectives and merits. I adapt an open, honest approach and respect and promote equality and diversity. In addition to the above, as a representative I would like to be actively involved with CPD and with my experience writing modules both pre and post graduate at university I believe these skills would allow me to continue the adaption of the colleges career framework, paramedic and post-graduate guidance and scope of practice documents. This will essentially will explore new an innovative ways of promoting the value of the profession.

Scotland

Tom McMurray

I have a wide range of experiences working both within the ambulance service and privately. I worked my way up through SAS as a technician, paramedic, team leader and eventually and advanced paramedic. I took a heavy interest in education whilst working as a team leader, assisting a large number of VQ students with portfolios and assessments. I have since left SAS and tried the private world, but have now eventually ended up being a paramedic lecturer at GCU.

I have a keen interest in CPD, having completed my post-grad diploma in remote and offshore medicine, and currently getting ready to sit my DipIMC. I believe with this wide range of experiences and my friendly, welcoming and accommodating demeanour, I could act well as a members representative for Scotland

East Midlands

Mark Hall

Currently I am employed as a Specialist Paramedic with East Midlands Ambulance Service, living and working in the East Midlands Region. I have been a full member of the college since 2018. My current role within the ambulance service sees me undertake clinical leadership roles as well as attending and contributing to regular team meetings and CPD sessions. These are both face to face and virtual. As a specialist clinical role I engage with both senior management, fellow advanced clinicians and more junior members of staff on a daily basis. These CPD sessions allow me to personally progress my clinical and leadership knowledge as well as supporting others in their development.

The college is a professional body with over 20,000 members, aiming to support them in clinical practice to achieve high standards of patient care as well as promotion of health and wellbeing within the workforce. I was motivated to apply for the East Midlands Representative position for several reasons. Primarily the opportunity to act as an ambassador for clinical practice and being able to contribute to furthering the development of the paramedic profession. This is an aspect that is very important to me. Currently working in a senior clinical role has offered me the chance to inform and educate staff during incidents, something that I personally enjoy. Additionally, I work on an ad-hoc basis in educational settings, supporting the most junior members of our career field to achieve their full potential. This demonstrates my capability to give my time to alternate roles alongside full time clinical demand. The ability to contribute to both an individual’s and the colleges development through dissemination of college support and CPD would be very rewarding. These reasons support both the colleges and my own values of promoting excellence and supporting colleagues.

Areas I believe that are currently prominent issues within the paramedic profession nationally include staff retention levels, resource demand and exposure to physical/verbal abuse of staff. Additionally, these are elements I take a key interest in when supporting staff.

The development of my personal attributes and clinical skills throughout my career have led to being a well-rounded and respected clinician. I have built strong professional relationships with my peers and fellow healthcare professionals. I believe I provide a good role model for junior colleagues, the positivity I show to their development makes me an approachable senior member of the team. My open and honest approach to healthcare allows me to practice with integrity and accountability for my actions.

Furthermore, since gaining my registration in 2017 I have worked in various national and international settings; through military, volunteer and NHS employment. Additionally, I have frequently taken the opportunity continue my post-graduate education. With the aim of completing a full MSc in the near future whilst maintaining full time employment. I believe this varied employment has given me a large basis of experience, which would be beneficial to representing the East Midlands, supporting college development plans.

London

Henry Agbor

It is my firm belief that great leaders achieve the best results when they make a group feel heard. It’s the attitude I have always relied upon in my past and current leadership roles and the same I would bring to the Member Representative role at the College of Paramedics.

With my eight years of leadership experience working in both the congress and executive council of the Paramedic Students’ Association of Nigeria (PasAN), as well as serving as the National Representative of the Association of Emergency Medical Technologist, Paramedics (AEMT-P) for Lagos State, Nigeria, I feel that my extensive knowledge and talents overlap with the College of Paramedics’ role description for the Member Representative.

As a leader, my association members know I am both approachable and zero-excuse. I expect the best of my people while being there to support them every step of the way. I am friendly but can also deal with conflicts and ensure that goals are continuously achieved. For these reasons, I have received several commendations and recommendations throughout my leadership journey.
Interestingly, I have been in touch with the college for three years and have always worked to promote the college’s activities from Africa. In 2020, when I served as the President of the Paramedic Students’ Association of Nigeria, I was able to get the Paramedic students in Nigeria to participate virtually in the UK Paramedic Students Conference. Also, I had the opportunity to speak at the first International Education Conference organized by the College of Paramedics, Australian College of Paramedicine, and Paramedic Association of Canada in 2021. In addition, I chaired part of the National Conference of the College in 2022 (#ParaCon22), and I networked to engage Paramedics from five African countries (Nigeria, Kenya, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa) to participate in the International Paramedics Day (#IPD2022). Most recently, I was also opportune to speak at this year’s National Conference of the College (#ParaCon23) where I was able to build a stronger connection with the college and its members.

I have always been a great advocate of the college and with my years of experience leading Paramedic Students and Paramedics, I am convinced I will be able to promote regional engagement, collaboration with members, and work to also support the Student Council Representative in London as well as working with the CPD Team to promote CPD events within the region/sector.

My interest in the role is high because while it involves representing the College; ensuring that College activities and services appropriately address the needs of the members and the profession and speaking up for members in the region, it also encourages feedback; allowing opportunities to continue learning and developing yourself as well as your leadership skills.

I admire the College’s commitment to promoting diversity, equity, belonging, and wellbeing and being from a black background, I strongly believe that I could help the college grow exponentially with these visions in mind.

Karen McVeagh

I joined the ambulance service in 2015 after completing my BSc in Biomedical Sciences. Since then, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the road and in education and I believe I possess the qualities necessary to effectively represent and advocate for London members. Recently, I have been appointed as the Clinical Tutor Development lead at Medipro, where I work with a tutor group focused on training the next generation of paramedics and AAPs across the UK and London. I enjoy maintaining my own competence and have an MSc in Emergency Medicine and Resuscitation from QMUL. I am passionate about progressing the professional development of paramedics and would strive to promote engagement of CPD events across London to ensure the development of skills and professional progression.

Having lived in London for many years, I aim to promote the voices of London paramedics and represent the views and issues raised by members. Witnessing the significant impact that professional organisations can have on the advancement of the paramedic profession, I am eager to contribute to the College of Paramedics.

As the Clinical Tutor Development lead, I have gained valuable experience representing clinical tutors and effectively communicating with groups of people. This has honed my abilities to actively listen to the concerns, needs, and suggestions of fellow paramedics, and to advocate for their interests and well-being.

I enjoy working in collaborative environments and building relationships with diverse individuals. I believe in fostering unity among paramedics and encouraging teamwork to achieve joint goals. As a Member's Representative, I aim to actively engage with members, hearing their perspectives and working together to pursue positive change within the profession. I understand the importance of collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to address the needs of our members and ensure the college's activities align with their requirements.

I am committed to advocating for the interests of paramedics and ensuring their professional development and wellbeing. I am well-versed in the current challenges faced by paramedics and the evolving healthcare landscape. I will actively engage in discussions, propose new ideas, and contribute to strategic decision-making that supports the growth and advancement of the paramedic profession. I am particularly passionate about promoting support services for ambulance staff and consider promoting mental wellbeing to be a priority.

I am effective at managing responsibilities and prioritising tasks. I am comfortable handling administrative duties, attending meetings, and representing the college at relevant events. I will diligently fulfil my obligations as a Member's Representative and contribute to the smooth functioning of the college. Managing large workloads while completing my MSc in Emergency Medicine and Resuscitation while working full time has honed my organisational skills.

Furthermore, I fully resonate with the aims and ethos of the College of Paramedics, and I am committed to upholding its professional reputation and am enthusiastic about promoting the ideas and views of the members of London.
