Paramedic Simulation Network

Simulation has been a feature of paramedic education and training from the outset, you’re probably picturing a Resusci Anne as you read this, or an airway head strapped to the underside of a table?!

Defined as ‘a model of a real activity or event, used for training, problem-solving, or testing’ [Cambridge Dictionary 2024], simulation provides a safe learning environment in which we can practice skills and make mistakes without any detriment to patients (or ourselves). The opportunities for simulation are plentiful and its contribution to paramedic education extremely valuable; as demand for practice based learning experiences increases year on year with greater numbers of learners from across all disciplines; the dependence on high quality, robust simulation continues to grow.

In recognition of the above, the College of Paramedics Education Team launched the Paramedic Simulation Network in December 2024.
Bob Willis MCPara, chair of the network is keenly pursuing the prioritisation of a strategy with a view to delivering the following outcomes:
Improved consistency, quality, and efficiency of simulation-based education.
Enhanced learner outcomes through structured and standardised simulation experiences.
A robust repository of scenarios accessible to all stakeholders.
Stronger collaboration between academia, industry, and professional bodies.

‘Prioritising this simulation strategy will ensure a cohesive, high-quality approach to simulation-based education. By adopting agreed standards, evaluating current practices, fostering knowledge sharing, and leveraging commercial partnerships, this initiative will position stakeholders to effectively meet the demands of evolving education and training landscapes.’ Bob Willis MCPara.

New members are welcome – for more information get in touch at: Education@Collegeofparamedics.co.uk

The intention is to create a Framework for Simulation in Education – specifically considering simulation as an approach to learning from the perspective of developing skills and additionally as a supporting mechanism to learning in practice.

This network will also consider all technology enhanced approaches including Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). The intention is that it will bring together Simulation Leads from all education arenas to collaborate and share best practice whilst developing a framework and resources for the profession. The members of the network will be a mix of backgrounds and roles to ensure that innovation is enabled and inclusivity encouraged.
