The Pre-hospital and Emergency Department ECG Course (PhEDECs) – level 2

About PhEDECs:


ECG interpretation is a fundamental part of effective emergency medical care and a professional requirement for both pre-hospital and emergency department staff.

PhEDECs™ comprises of three levels, appropriate for a variety of learners, and covers a range of learning outcomes incorporating elements of the diagnostic approach to ECGs, underlying anatomy and physiology, rhythm interpretation, and associated treatment.

Aim:
The aim of PhEDECs™ Level 2 is to ensure learners are be able to recognise common ECG patterns, critically evaluate them in the context of their clinical presentation and provide appropriate patient care.

Objectives:
- To ensure learners have reviewed and understood the content of PhEDECs™ level 1
- To introduce learners to the holistic assessment of patients with ECG abnormalities
- To ensure learners can identify common arrhythmias: atrial, junctional, and ventricular
- To help learners develop a comprehensive understanding of ACS: clinical presentation and ECG changes
- To ensure learners critically evaluate ECG changes and apply judgement in the clinical context

Entry criteria:
PhEDECs™ Level 2 is aimed at clinicians fulfilling levels 5–6 on the Skills for Health Career Framework. Examples include:
- Band 6 Paramedic
- Band 6 Nurse
- Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner
- EM ST1–3 Doctor

Please note: completion of PhEDECs™ level 1 (or similar course) is a prerequisite to level 2 as the fundamental concepts will not be revisited.

Parking, travel and amenities:
- Fruitworks @ Fond Coffee is situated in the centre of Canterbury. There are three car parks nearby: Orange Street, Stour Street and Castle Street multi-storey.

- There are two main train stations nearby: Canterbury West (11 min walk) and Canterbury East (10 min walk).

- Fruitworks is located within Fond Coffee who serve arguably the best coffee in Canterbury, as well as pastries and other light bites.

- Lunch and refreshments are not provided however there are a number of shops, cafes, and other food and drink venues nearby.
