Out of Hospital Doesn’t Mean Out of Control, the Value of Human Factors in OH – NLS
Presented by Andy Youngson, Advanced Paramedic, East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust
A significant skills gap exists in paramedic education associated to maternal care knowledge, newborn life support and the influence of human factors (HF) education. Paramedics report that High Acuity, Low Occurrence (HALO) incidents, such as out-of-hospital (OH) newborn life support (NLS) events, present significant stressors with increased clinical risk, emotional burden, and decision-making challenges. This session focuses on HF awareness, focusing on the correlation between good human factors practice and clinical care provision in OH NLS.

Speaker Bio - As an individual, Andy holds 15 years’ experience within the Ambulance Service, presently an Advanced Paramedic at East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, academically achieving an MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and an educator on several Resuscitation Council UK courses. I hold a passion for high acuity clinical care, focusing on maternal and newborn emergencies within the pre-hospital environment. A career in both aviation and emergency care has driven a passion for human factors, understanding how error occurs and developing process to create change to reduce the effects of high acuity low occurrence effects for clinicians and patients alike
