Paramedic Education and Support Programme (PESP) for Primary and Urgent Care

What is the Paramedic Education and Support in Primary and Urgent Care Programme (PESP)?

The College of Paramedics are offering a free education and support programme to paramedics working in Primary and Urgent Care across the Devolved Nations. Each session will be hosted by the College of Paramedics with guest multi-professional speakers and will encompass clinical and non-clinical topics relevant to paramedic practice in primary and urgent care work environments. There will also be opportunities for advanced paramedics to provide peer support and facilitate the case study reflections which will help meet and uphold their leadership and/or educational pillars of practice.

Sessions will be run virtually from 12:30-13:30 once or twice each month, with additional Moodle based case study and peer discussion platforms accessible 24/7. We anticipate there will be extra sessions led by paramedics with special interests or advanced skills.

Dates will be advertised on the College’s Events page, and once you sign up to the Moodle Community HERE you will also receive email notifications of the session speakers, topics and dates.

Why attend the Paramedic Education and Support in Primary and Urgent Care Programme?

It has been recognised that the transition and continued development of paramedics moving into Primary and Urgent Care can be challenging with varying opportunities for specific learning and appropriate supervision. These sessions are based around topics identified by paramedics as important and relevant to the ongoing development of paramedic practice, with a focus on primary and urgent care. However, this does not mean the sessions are only open to paramedics in these settings, everyone is welcome to join. The plan is to support meeting the learning needs for paramedics working in non-emergency settings, whilst also providing valuable additional learning opportunities for all paramedics.

The aim of PESP is to establish an education and support programme that facilitates and develops the learning needs of paramedics working in Primary and Urgent Care, or those with an interest in working in these settings.

Our objectives are to host a Community of Practice which will:

1. Provide multi-professional educational support to paramedics working in Primary and Urgent Care.
2. Identify and address the learning needs of paramedics delivering care in Primary and Urgent Care work environments.
3. Enable a network of peer facilitated development opportunities using case studies and reflection opportunities.
4. Promote and utilise paramedics with advanced skills or with special interests to educate other paramedics and develop a network of paramedic peer leaders.

How does it work?
Live teaching sessions will run over lunchtime with a question and answer session at the end.  A recording of the presentation will be uploaded to the Moodle platform, though the Q&A will NOT be recorded.  Further discussion will take place using a community forum. Booking onto the Event does not mean you will automatically have access to Moodle, you need to sign up for that separately HERE

Who can join the PESP community?
PESP is for all paramedics across the UK.  Members of the College of Paramedics have free access indefinitely.  Non-member access has been funded by NHS England from April 2025 to the end of December 2025.

What to do next
Our first live teaching session PESP Event 1.1 launches on Thursday 24th April 2025 - 12:30-13:30 with the opening teaching session led by Dr Tony Chalmers, a GP in Southampton with experience of both employing and teaching primary care paramedics. His presentation 'Managing Risk and Uncertainty in Primary Care' is a must-attend event for all paramedics, particularly those in primary and urgent care.
