The College of Paramedics has acknowledged for some time that the issue of medicine administration by student paramedics has been the subject of a great amount of discussion between organisations that provide students with clinical placements (in particular, NHS Ambulance Services) and the Universities where student paramedics are studying. It is not a simple or clear-cut subject, but we have been keen to ensure our ability to clarify this issue for our members, and as we are frequently approached for the College’s own views on this matter by a range of stakeholder organisations. We have therefore taken some time to seek a range of opinions and to look closely at the legislation to establish our position, and to provide some guidance on the subject for all those involved in supporting student paramedics in a clinical environment. The document sets out the College’s position on medicine administration by student paramedics whilst on clinical placement.
