Improving public engagement in bystander CPR training in North England

Date: Tuesday 23rd May 2023

Aims/objectives:
Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCPR) and public access defibrillator (PAD) use are essential links in the ‘Chain of Survival’ for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, in England, BCPR is delivered in only 40% of cases (Resuscitation Council UK, 2017) and population-level studies suggest low rates of BCPR are correlated to lower socio-economic status (SES) (Sasson et al., 2012).  A mixed methods study was conducted to explore public attitudes towards BCPR and PAD use in postcode districts of varying SES across North East England and North Cumbria.  This abstract reports participants’ suggestions on health messaging and possible approaches to tuition of BCPR and PAD use.

Laura currently works a 50/50 hybrid role as an operational and research paramedic. She has been involved in pre-hospital research projects over the last decade, having first been seconded to a research paramedic post on the Paramedic-1 trial which compared mechanical and manual chest compressions. She has since designed, conducted, published and presented her own primary research work, largely centred around mechanical chest compression device use. She was very fortunate to be invited to present one of the pieces of work in Nashville Tennessee as part of the EMS World Expo, following a presentation at the College of Paramedics national conference. Laura has also recruited patients to several pre-hospital research studies, worked a secondment at Warwick University Clinical Trials Unit and held the position of DMEC independent clinician for a pre-hospital CPAP study.
