Organising a Medevac and Training Programme in Ukraine

Date: Wednesday 24th May 2023

In February 2020 with the new invasion of Ukraine many humanitarian medical organisations, both large and small, began working in Ukraine. This talk will focus on the efforts of one of these groups, Cadus, and our work both training civilians and running ICU medevacs in Ukraine.

The talk will give a brief overview of the work Cadus are doing in Ukraine and give a case study example of an ICU medical evacuation to demonstrate considerations made whilst organising critical care in resource limited environments. Considerations and difficulties for providing training in the humanitarian/conflict environment will also be described and discussed.

Cadus e.V is a German NGO and a part of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Emergency Medical Team (EMT) response model. We have been active in Ukraine since April 2022, initially working in the West of the country but now mostly focused in the East. Cadus are an NGO that was set up by a collective including German paramedics with the aim of providing medical humanitarian aid in ways that are inclusive and sustainable, and has experience working in a range of countries and situations.

When providing humanitarian aid Cadus work with multi-disciplinary teams and a large amount of the work involves paramedics, with paramedic input at every level of the organisation. This talk should give attendees an understanding of some of the difficulties in planning and running medical aid in conflict zones and an image of what it is like working as a medical humanitarian aid worker.
