Conversation analysis of EMS calls where out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is imminent

Date: Tuesday 23rd May 2023

To compare and examine the communication behaviour of Emergency Medical Dispatchers (EMDs) and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) callers where patients are at imminent risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), to understand the implications of differences in call interaction for subsequent developments (i.e., triage outcomes).

I am a Senior Research Fellow in Emergency Care at the University of the West of England, Bristol, a paramedic with over 20 years frontline experience of prehospital care and the Lead Research Paramedic for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. I have been working as a clinical researcher since 2014 with my main research interests being improving outcomes from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, enhancing the paramedic role in end-of-life care and investigating the patient and family liaison practitioner role in the air ambulance setting.

I have recently completed an NIHR Doctoral Fellowship focused on improving the recognition and response to patients who are at imminent risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Continuing from this work I am now investigating how ambulance services can better triage patients presenting with chest pain to improve patient outcomes using machine learning.
