Our programme is repeated on both days and includes
10:00-10:30 - Managing the Normal Birth
Emergency birth is generally a cause of anxiety for pre-hospital clinicians, with minimal training and exposure to pre-hospital birth. In this session Aimee will discuss the physiological underlying principles which will take this maternity session ‘back to basics’ and explain why mastering the basic principles can help reduce interventions and complexities.
Presented by Aimee Yarrington, Paramedic Midwife

10:45-11:15 - Neonatal Emergencies
Having progressed through the birth, managing neonatal emergencies can stretch our bandwidth, however with a dynamic approach and critical thinking we can deliver best practice.
Presented by Camella Main, Lead Midwife – Pre-Hospital Maternity Care London Ambulance Service

11:30-12:00 - Newborn Assessment and Keeping Calm Whilst Assessing Clinical and Safeguarding Risk
Claire will be looking into the importance of taking a holistic approach towards patient care when attending to a maternity related call. Knowing how to navigate conversations around engagement with maternity care whilst assessing clinical and safeguarding risk in relation to the newborn, and recognising when to escalate concerns in the presence of Red Flags.
Presented by Claire Sidley-Jenkins, London Ambulance Service Safeguarding Team - Safeguarding Specialist

12:15-1245 - Experience of Trauma and PTSD in Children and Adolescents
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one possible reaction to trauma which is associated with a range of poor outcomes related to quality of life and overall functioning, as well as comorbidity with other mental health difficulties. Katie will present leading research into PTSD in young people and relate these findings to the emergency care setting.
Presented by Katie Lofthouse PhD student

13:00-13:30 - Silver Trauma, Gold Standard
Older people commonly experience trauma, including major trauma, with outcomes worse than in younger people. This talk will focus on pre-hospital assessment and management, mostly from a medical viewpoint.
Presented by Dr Jonathan Treml, Consultant Geriatrician

13:45-14:15 - Recognising Death and Documentation
Making split minute decisions can push ourselves into uncomfortable environments despite our extensive training, however, recognising death can take a matter of seconds and we just need to know what to look for and how to assess. Once assessed and news delivered, we move onto documenting, and this is scrutinised and can instil fear. We hear from our expert on how to recognise and document to reduce fear and anxiety.
Presented by Michael Smyth PhD fellow at Warick University

14:30-15:00 - Asystole to Ashes
Breaking bad news can be hard to deliver and delivering it in such a way to not cause further distress, even more difficult. There are many different acronyms used, however, little is known about their validly of practicalities. Carl has many years of experience working in a pre-hospital environment so he has first-hand experience of delivering bad news and in his talk he provides his own developed structure and a few ‘dos and don’ts’ when undertaking this important conversation.
Presented by Carl Smith Head of Clinical development for Emergency and Critical Care at the College of Paramedics

15:15-15:30 - #WeAreHuman - Looking After Our Own Mental Health
The COVID-19 pandemic, increased demand for health services attending distressing calls and a rise in everyday stresses can impact our psychological health. In this session Jo talks mental health, support and coping strategies when working under pressure.
Presented by Jo Mildenhall Paramedic Psychological Health & Wellbeing Manager

Please note these sessions may be subject to change.
