This course aims to provide healthcare personnel with the assessment and airway management skills necessary for effective resuscitation at birth. It will meet the needs of healthcare providers who do not require the more advanced skills provided on the Newborn Life Support (NLS) course or the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP). This course is suitable for all grades, including students and VQ4.
By undertaking this course, you will:
Develop an understanding of the physiological processes that can lead to the need for stabilisation and resuscitation of the newborn.
Practice the assessment and immediate care of babies requiring resuscitation at birth.
Acquire practical experience in using neonatal resuscitation equipment.
During the course, you will be supported by instructors who are experienced trainers. The course comprises pre-course engagement with recorded lectures and a specifically written manual, and the completion of a pre-course multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) before attending the face-to-face taught component. This MCQ is a formative assessment, not a pass or fail, but has a target mark of 80%. If you achieve less than this mark you will have an opportunity to discuss this with your mentor during the taught element of the course.
The taught component includes discussions, skills stations and teaching scenarios. Your skills performance will be continuously assessed throughout the course with appropriate feedback provided. You will be required to undertake a scenario-based skills summative assessment to successfully complete the course. This will cover all the skills demonstrated and taught throughout the day. If you do not achieve the expected learning outcomes of the course, you will have an opportunity to repeat the assessment after some remedial teaching.
On successful completion of the scenario-based skills assessment you will be sent a certificate and will have the award recorded on the central index held by SMMDP for a period of 4 years when you will be reminded of the need to refresh.
