Community of Practice is a concept first theorised in the early 1990’s, it is a group of people who “share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly” (Etienne and Wenger-Trainer (2015).

Sam Willis, Programme Lead in Paramedicine, based in Western Australian has imbedded this concept into his course. Having a platform where students, mentors, educators and clinicians can come together, discuss a topic, share ideas and learn from each other has been invaluable to the development of each participant.

In these regular monthly sessions, we bring this community of practice to the UK and welcome open discussion. By getting people together from all stages of our careers, a topic will be posed and then breakout rooms formed. At the end, the group comes back together to summarise the session and report key learning points. During these sessions people have the ability to discuss a case of their own, reflect on a case presented and through friendship, respect and collegiality learn from others. We should all aspire to be role models and we can learn much from each other.

The first topic to kick-start in July is based around violence towards ambulance staff and the introduction of body worn cameras. According to a report published by the NHS in 2021 it is reported that 3,569 ambulance staff were physically assaulted in 2020, this is up 30% on 5 years previous. Following successful trials in London and the Northeast this rollout is becoming nation-wide and 10 ambulance trusts have signed up, is your trust one of them? Body worn cameras were first introduced in 2005 within the Police force and they have helped prosecute people who assault staff. Have you experienced being assaulted, does this affect your current practice, do you feel body cameras will be affective to your work?
