The College of Paramedics is delighted to welcome leading expert in Geriatric Emergency Medicine Professor Jay Banerjee to lead this webinar.  Every day, paramedics face challenging decisions caring for patients with a complexity of conditions causing frailty.

Jay is an Emergency Physician at the University Hospitals of Leicester with special interest in caring for older people.  He is a previous lead for the Frailty Special Interest Group at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and previously led the national multi-disciplinary group in the UK that produced the “Silver Book” and a multi-national, multi-disciplinary group the produced the “Standard Set for Older Person” for the International Consortium for Health Outcome Measurement. Jay has also been an IHI Quality Improvement Fellow.

The development of acute frailty services is crucial for our ageing population. According to the Office for National Statistics UK 2021 census, over one-sixth (18.6%, 11.1 million) of the population were aged 65 years and over and this is estimated to increase to 25% of the population in the next 20 years.  A person who is defined as frail is at high risk of adverse outcomes such as falls, immobility, delirium, incontinence, side effects of medication – and admission to hospital or the need for long-term care. (NHS England, 2024).
