The UK College of Paramedics and the Australasian College of Paramedicine are pleased to be collaborating on this webinar, offering members of both organisations the opportunity to view the session live.

This event will profile the Queensland High Acuity Response Unit and their role in responding to critically unwell medical and trauma patients. It will discuss the training, clinical governance, skill mix, equipment and team focus on clinical excellence in pre-hospital critical care.

Matthew Meister and Dr Stephen Rashford, both from Queensland Ambulance will be joined by Christian Wiggins an International Critical Care Paramedic Representative for the UK College of Paramedics, to present on his fellowship findings across differing critical care teams in Australasia as well as future development for pre-hospital critical care practice in the United Kingdom.

Presenter Bios

Christian Wiggins
- Christian is an International Critical Care Paramedic Representative for the UK College of Paramedics and currently works as a Critical Care Paramedic for Great Western Ambulance and a Royal College of Emergency Medicine trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner at Southmead Hospital Emergency Department, the largest Major Trauma Centre in the South West of the UK.

Christian has previously worked in Hazardous Area Response Medicine and spent several years as the Specialist Lead - Critical Care representing all the Air Ambulances in the Southwest. He continues to examine on the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care Diploma in Immediate Medical Care Exam and helped establish the College of Paramedics Special Interest Group in Critical Care. 

Christian is passionate about Paramedic development and professionalisation; supporting our Paramedic colleagues in pursuing excellence and delivering the very best care to our patients. He believes strongly in the benefits of sharing best practice. In 2019 Christian won a Churchill Fellowship to travel to Australasia to work with, and learn from, some of the worlds best Paramedic Led Critical Care teams. His report has been published and Christian is now in the process of representing the UK College of Paramedics and setting up a permanent International Critical Care group to help share ideas formally. 

Matthew Meister - Matt has been a paramedic with the Queensland ambulance service for 15 years and as a critical care paramedic since 2011, he has spent the last 6 years working on the High Acuity Response Unit (HARU). Matt is a qualified USAR level 2 officer and heavily involved in police tactical medical training. Matt has specific interest in road traffic trauma and penetrating injuries. In his free time Matt lives on the sunny Gold Coast of Queensland with his wife and two young children.

Dr Stephen Rashford - Dr Rashford is a specialist emergency physician and medical director of the Queensland Ambulance Service. He has been medical director since 2005 and overseen a significant expansion in practice, including several novel treatment strategies. He is committed to ensuring quality evidence-based care. Dr Rashford will regularly attend cases in the field with paramedics. His special interests revolve around innovative trauma care interventions, including airway management, point of care ultrasound, aggressive blood product administration and high-performance quality assurance activities. He only wishes this same commitment to improvement would extend to his golf game!

Do I need a Zoom account to attend the event?
No you do not need a Zoom account to attend the event. The link will be emailed to you 24 hours before the event. When you are ready to join please click the link emailed to you and follow the instructions.

What if I am late or only want to attend a later session?
The link will be valid for the whole of the event so you can join the meeting as soon as you are ready. This will not disturb the presenter.

Will I be seen during the event?
The event will be recorded so we can put the sessions on our CPD hub. Zoom will pick up some of the audience on the screen so you may be recorded. If you do not want to be recorded please ensure your camera is off.

How do I see the main presenter during the event?
Please ensure your view is set to ‘speaker view’. This setting can be found in the top right corner of your screen once the event has started.

Will I have an opportunity to ask questions?
We will have the chat function available so you can type questions to our chat monitors during the sessions. If your question is not chosen we are hoping to get answers to all of the questions after the event and place them on the College website. Due to the large number of attendees we request that you stay on mute during the whole event.

Will I receive a CPD certificate?
You will receive a certificate of attendance, details of how to access this will be emailed to you after the event
