Job Title:
Principal Lecturer, Programme Leader BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science
Place of Work:
University of Hertfordshire, London Ambulance Service, College of Paramedics

What does your job include?
As Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science programme, my work is incredibly varied. I am responsible for ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the paramedic programme. This includes planning and delivering the curriculum to ensure that the programme continues to meet the HCPC and College of Paramedics’ expectations as well as supporting both the teaching team and all of the students. The role involves a lot of close working with partner ambulance trusts as well as internal departments within the university. I lead several modules, including Professional Practice for Paramedics, Law & Ethics for Paramedics and Practice Educator courses. This includes teaching and assessment, including marking both practical and written assessments. The Programme is constantly reviewed and developed, so the work never stops! Alongside the role of Programme Leader, I undertake work for the College of Paramedics in a number of voluntary roles, including acting as Trustee for Education. As an academic paramedic I am involved in the writing of chapters in professional texts and acting as an external adviser and external examiner for a range of educational institutions. I am also invited to present at conferences and share my expertise.

How did you get into your role?
My development into this role has been based on extensive experience as a paramedic and educationalist. I have worked as a paramedic since 1998, progressing through the internal development route to become an IHCD tutor before undertaking a post graduate certificate in education. Close links with the university, both as a student and as an ambulance service link tutor, developed my interest in pursuing a role within higher education. My academic progression has been mirrored by my professional development, with my role as an HCPC partner exposing me to a wide range of educational approaches around the UK, as well gaining experience in fitness to practise and CPD matters. As well as completing an undergraduate degree in Paramedic Science, I have completed a Masters Degree in Health Law & Ethics in Practice and a Doctorate in Education.

What do you think is the most important benefit of being a member of the College of Paramedics, and why?
As a very active member of the College of Paramedics, it is sometimes easy to overlook the many benefits of membership that I take for granted! From an educational perspective, access to learning resources, CPD activities and professional guidance is a key benefit, including the extensive e-learning packages that the College has produced as well as fully informed and robust curriculum guidance. As an individual, knowing that the College is there to promote the profession and support the professional recognition that paramedics deserve is a key benefit.
