How did you get into your role?
My development into this role has been based on extensive experience as a paramedic and educationalist. I have worked as a paramedic since 1998, progressing through the internal development route to become an IHCD tutor before undertaking a post graduate certificate in education. Close links with the university, both as a student and as an ambulance service link tutor, developed my interest in pursuing a role within higher education. My academic progression has been mirrored by my professional development, with my role as an HCPC partner exposing me to a wide range of educational approaches around the UK, as well gaining experience in fitness to practise and CPD matters. As well as completing an undergraduate degree in Paramedic Science, I have completed a Masters Degree in Health Law & Ethics in Practice and a Doctorate in Education.
What do you think is the most important benefit of being a member of the College of Paramedics, and why?
As a very active member of the College of Paramedics, it is sometimes easy to overlook the many benefits of membership that I take for granted! From an educational perspective, access to learning resources, CPD activities and professional guidance is a key benefit, including the extensive e-learning packages that the College has produced as well as fully informed and robust curriculum guidance. As an individual, knowing that the College is there to promote the profession and support the professional recognition that paramedics deserve is a key benefit.
