The College of Paramedics is pleased to announce the much-anticipated return of the UK Student Paramedic Conference (UKSPC) IN PERSON for 2023! Join us in Swansea on Friday 14th April, for a wide variety of topics, delivered by renowned experts in their specialties.

We are delighted to be able to offer a special ticket price of only £30 for Student members of the College of Paramedics!

This year we’ll be exploring what motivates us as students. Traditionally, we attribute motivation to success, reward, money, and power but with that comes punishment and sacrifice. In the new era of Paramedicine, we are learning that our motivation to excel is intrinsic
 
UKSPC attributes the core themes for this year’s conference from Daniel Pink, five times New York Times best seller and author of ‘Drive – the surprising truth about what motivates us’ (2009). In this fantastic read Daniel highlights three areas of motivation at work and, together during UKSPC 2022, we will explore how these relate to Paramedicine and how we will push ourselves and our profession forward:

1) Mastery – our drive to continually improve our skills and knowledge and start to become ‘masters’ of Paramedicine.

2) Autonomy – our drive to be self-directed and confident during difficult decision-making and challenging situations, all whilst working within a wider team of experts.

3) Purpose – our drive to do something every day which has meaning, importance and value in the modern world.
 
Programme includes
Managing maternity – more than just catching babies! - Presented by Aimee Yarrington Midwife & Paramedic 
Aimee will be using her expertise to talk you through how to help develop skills in this area where exposure is minimal and the risks are high. 

Purpose: Advancing Paramedic Practice in Critical Care - Presented by Elliott Rees, Critical Care Practitioner, EMRTS / Wales Air Ambulance  
Elliott will discuss the current landscape of critical care in relation to paramedic practice. Where is it now? Where are we going? As well as discussing the development of an advanced practice role in critical care and the professionalisation of critical care a specialist area within paramedic practice in the UK.  

Purposeful Paramedics: Resource Allocation - Presented by Dwain Longley, Paramedic Operations Manager, Yorkshire Ambulance Service 
A 20 minute presentation discussing considerations for both specialist and none specialist responder allocation at incidents. The session will cover an overview of initial scene assessment, communication, and multi agency considerations. 

Purpose: Diversity in Paramedicine - Presented by Sarah Todd, Diversity, Equity and Belonging Manager - College of Paramedics and South West Paramedic Systems Relationship Manager – Health Education England 
Paramedicine is not a diverse profession. This impacts on the quality of the care we provide the public and the health inequalities experienced by those from minority groups. How do we overcome this lack of diversity and attract those who may not have considered paramedicine as a career of choice?

Zip It! A Model of Paramedic Praxis - Presented by Vince Clarke, Principal Lecturer Programme Leader BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science, University of Hertfordshire, Trustee for Education, College of Paramedics 
The zip analogy is a simplified representation of the model of Paramedic Praxis, a concept whereby the relationship between theory and practice is such that the ‘gaps’ discussed in nursing, and other professional literature, do not manifest in the same, potentially problematic, manner.  
Its purpose is to support practice-based learning undertaken by students and facilitated by Practice Educators. 
 
In addition to the fantastic programme there’ll be a variety of exhibitors, equipment demonstrations, network opportunities, prizes to be won, great food and a chance to hear from students like yourselves getting hints and tips for surviving in whichever year you’re embarking on.

Speaker Bios
Aimee Yarrington

    

Aimee has been a midwife since 2003. She has worked in all areas of midwifery practice, from the high risk consultant led units to the low risk stand-alone midwife-led units. She left full-time midwifery practice to join the ambulance service, starting as an emergency care assistant and working her way up to paramedic, while always keeping her midwifery practice up to date. She has worked in several areas within the ambulance service including the emergency operations centre and the education and training department. Her work towards improving the education of pre-hospital maternity care has led to her being awarded a fellowship award from the College of Paramedics. Aimee strives to improve the teaching and education for clinicians in dealing with pre-hospital maternity care.

Elliott Rees 

 

Elliott is an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner specialising in critical care in both HEMS and interhospital transfer & retrieval settings. Currently based in South Wales, he practices full time for EMRTS / Wales Air Ambulance. His professional interests include post-resuscitation care, trauma resuscitation and clinical education. He is affiliated with Swansea University as a visiting lecturer on the BSc Paramedic Science program. In his spare time, he enjoys playing guitar, piano and expanding / consuming his gin collection. Elliott is a full member of the College of Paramedics and holds Advanced Practitioner Membership of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh).

Dwain Longley
   

Dwain Longley is a published author (Standby CPD), Town Councillor and PhD student (Open University), and serving member of the Yorkshire Ambulance Service. His primary role is as an Area Operations Manager (Paramedic), with a specialist interest in major incident management, Incident Command and Specialist Operations. He is also an associate educator and has been delivering courses related to resilience, command, and speciality command to a variety of commanders within his Trust since October 2019 including leading on the development of the Specialist Operations Response Team (SORT) training. He has been a registered paramedic since 2010 and continues to practice as a clinician. He has been involved in several different leadership roles within the Trust since 2013 at an operational and tactical level. He operates as one of the Trust’s tactical commanders and has attended a number of large scale and complex incidents during his time as a commander. A St. John Ambulance volunteer since 2003 when he joined as a cadet, he has previously held several senior leadership positions and is currently the North East Regional President alongside volunteering as an event paramedic at his local unit.

Sarah Todd

   
 
Sarah started her career in paramedicine 30 years ago and has worked as a paramedic in the ambulance service, Primary Care (GP surgery and Minor Injury Unit), Higher Education ( Senior Lecturer, Associate Head of Department and Inclusivity Lead for the School of Health and Social Wellbeing) and now works for the College of Paramedics and Health Education England leading the diversity, equity and belonging agenda nationally and regionally in the South West where she is based, across both her roles. Sarah has a passion for eradicating social injustice and for supporting those in the profession to feel that they belong, whatever their background and life experiences.

Dr Vince Clarke

   

Vince is Programme Lead for the BSc(Hons) in Paramedic Science at the University of Hertfordshire.  
Vince is Trustee for Education for the College of Paramedics having previously held the position of Head of Endorsements. He maintains clinical currency and works for the London Ambulance Service as a Bank Paramedic.  
Vince’s Professional Doctorate in Education focused on the theory-practice relationship in paramedic undergraduate education. This work informed the development of university accredited ambulance service paramedic Practice Educator courses and forms the basis for the College of Paramedics’ approach to practice-based learning with Vince having edited the College publication ‘Paramedic Practice-based learning: A Handbook for Practice Educators and Facilitators’.
