Researching women in critical care roles, what I learnt and what does it mean, five years on.
Presenter by Alex Ulrich
Alex Ulrich
Advanced Paramedic Practitioners in Critical Care have been an integral part of the London Ambulance service (LAS) for almost a decade. They provide enhanced clinical care as part of a portfolio of extended clinical skills as well as a wealth of experience of managing critically ill and injured patients within the capital. Women have been traditionally underrepresented in these roles, despite an equal proportion of female Paramedics employed by the trust.
Alex has been an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner in Critical Care within the London Ambulance Service for 8 years and has worked part time as a Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Science at the University of Hertfordshire since 2020. Alex also undertook a secondment with London's Air Ambulance as a flight paramedic from 2019-2020 and has a keen interest in all things critical care, especially airway management and ventilation of patients with return of spontaneous circulation. After realising that there were far fewer women than men in the APP(CC) team, Alex committed her MSc dissertation to trying to understand why this was the case. In 2018, Alex graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with an MSc in Paramedic Science and has continued to be interested in this area, setting up the LAS' Women's Network in 2021, before going on maternity leave to have her son, Elliott. Alex is passionate about evidence-based practice, delivering high quality clinical care and promoting equity in opportunities for paramedics and their career progression.
This study aimed to gather the views of women in paramedic roles to gain some insight into potential reasons for this underrepresentation in critical care advanced paramedic roles.
