Same difference: paramedics in hospital roles

Increasing numbers of paramedics are now utilising their existing skills, knowledge and experience to work in roles within the hospital environment. These roles present very real opportunity for development and learning, however the transition to this environment can present some unique challenges for the paramedic and to the organisation. Els will explore these challenges, identifying solutions and provide some discussion points for those who work in a hospital role now and for those who aspire to make a move there in the future.

Els is a Consultant Paramedic and the Lead Advanced Clinical Practitioner in the Emergency Department at University Hospital Southampton. She is also a member of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine ACP Credentialing Committee and the Training Programme Lead (Urgent and Emergency Care) in the Health Education England SE Faculty of Advancing Practice.  

Els is involved in the College of Paramedics Education Advisory Group and Medicines and Critical Care Special Interest Groups and was awarded the Fellowship of the College in 2021.  

She has a special interest in Major Trauma, having recently completed doctoral research into the triage of severely injured patients and was previously the UHS non-medical lead for major trauma education.  

She has a strong interest in education of paramedics and all other emergency care staff and leads a regional ACP programme and lectures at the University of Southampton. She is the Chair of the UHS Advanced Paramedic Forum which aims to support paramedics in hospital roles and raises specific governance and prescribing issues within the organisation.
