The College of Paramedics is honoured to welcome Professor Bee Wee CBE for a special session on End of Life Care. With over 30 years’ experience, Professor Wee brings a wealth of international knowledge to End of Life, a topic which has developed vastly over the years.
The UK society is growing and we are living longer and according to age.uk (2019) there are nearly 12 million people aged 65 and above and 5.4 millions of these people are aged 75+. According to the World Health Organisation it is estimated 40 million people are in need of palliative care Worldwide and the care delivered is improving year on year (WHO, 2020).
As pre-hospital clinicians we are at the forefront of this care, whether that be to provide comfort and reassurance to a patient and their families in the dying days or recognise when someone is in need for specialist support and make that referral, we have the opportunity be a guide for those seeking advice and provide appropriate signposting.
We already provide great care however we can always develop and improve and through this session with Professor Wee, we’ll explore what End of Life currently looks like within the UK, what we can do to further support patients and loved ones and understand our role in the bigger picture of delivering holistic care.
