Welsh Senedd Election – Quick Guide

The next Senedd election will take place on Thursday 7 May 2026. This election introduces major changes to how the Senedd operates, including more Members, new constituencies, and a new voting system.
 
What is the Senedd?
The Senedd (Welsh Parliament) is the devolved legislature for Wales. It makes laws and decisions on areas such as:
Health and health services
Education and training
Tourism
Economic development
 
Some matters remain the responsibility of the UK Parliament at Westminster, including defence, immigration, policing, justice, and pensions.
 
Who Can Vote?
 You can vote if you:
Are aged 16 or over
Live in Wales
Are registered to vote

If You Can’t Vote in Person
 If you are working or unavailable on election day, you can still vote:
Postal vote
Apply by 5pm on 21 April
 
Proxy vote
Apply by 5pm on 28 April (someone you trust votes on your behalf)

Polling date: Thursday 7 May 2026
Polling hours: 7:00am – 10:00pm
Photo ID is NOT required for Senedd elections
 
What’s Changing in 2026?
This election will introduce several changes:
Senedd Members increasing from 60 to 96
Constituencies changing from 40 to 16
Each constituency will elect 6 Members
A proportional representation voting system (D’Hondt method) will be used
