David Rovardi MCPara has taken over from Andy Collen FCPara temporarily as the Independent Prescribing Lead for the College of Paramedics. Andy is currently on a 12 month secondment from SECAMB with the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) as a National Investigator.
David is a dual registered pharmacist independent prescriber and paramedic. He has a keen interest in analgesics, medicines safety and advanced practice. He is also a full team member of Glossop Mountain Rescue team.
Having completed his pharmacy degree from DeMontfort university in 1994 he completed his professional exams in 1995 and became a registered pharmacist. He has undertaken further professional qualifications since, including a post graduate diplomas in Pharmacy Practice and First Contact Care and post graduate certificates in Supplementary and Independent Prescribing and Advanced Physical Examination and Consultation Skills. He completed his Foundation Degree in Paramedic Science at Staffordshire University in 2017.
He has a varied career as a pharmacist including working in the private sector as a community pharmacist as well as undertaking work in hospital and working in primary care within GP surgeries, working with nursing and residential homes to review patient’s medication and working as part of multi-disciplinary team focused on prevention of hospital admissions. He has also worked on the development of patient group directives; non-medical prescribing policies and medicines safety polices as well as undertaking a two-year secondment as a lecturer/practitioner at Sheffield Hallam University teaching non-medical prescribing to a multi-disciplinary cohort of students.
David is hoping to be able to use his experience as a prescriber, practitioner and educator as well as experience in governance and implementation of non-medical prescribing in order to help promote and progress paramedic prescribing for the future benefit of the patient and the profession.
David is currently working as a front-line paramedic for East Midlands Ambulance service and works for the Health and Care Professionals council as an educational advisor.
