“Blue Hearts Don’t Start” - Terminating or withholding cardiopulmonary resuscitation: Can futility be accurately predicted in the pre-hospital environment?
Presented by Jon Newton MSc MCPara, t-ACP Emergency Medicine, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, and Senior Lecturer Paramedic Science University of Gloucestershire
Terminating or withholding cardiopulmonary resuscitation is irrefutably a tremendous responsibility for any clinician to make - and an area of practice surrounded by controversy and moral/ethical dilemma. This seminar explores many of the common challenges faced by paramedics and receiving emergency departments whilst providing a selection of novel, evidenced based strategies and a live simulation. If you want to improve your technical and non-technical resuscitation skills and digest the findings and future-practice recommendations of a contentious research study, this seminar is without doubt one for you! Student clinicians, technicians, paramedics, nurses and doctors are all welcome.
Jon Newton is an experienced paramedic and clinical educator, with a passion for emergency medicine. His interests in prehospital care first began in 2003 before progressing into an Ambulance Technician role. Jon has since worked in a variety of clinical settings as a Paramedic, Emergency Care Lead for Motocross, Paramedic Clinical Mentor/ Operational Commander, Associate Lecturer in Paramedic Science, Emergency Care Practitioner (A&E) and Lead Paramedic (A&E Resus’). He currently works in Hertfordshire as a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Emergency Medicine) and as a part-time Senior Lecturer in Paramedic Science at the University of Gloucestershire.
