In this two-part session, the College of Paramedics welcomes Ianto Guy, Vehicle Safety and Technology Consultant at the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL).

In this first session Ianto will explore the physics of road traffic collisions. He will delve into energy transfers and deceleration forces and their impact on the human body. Paving the way for a greater understanding of the severity of injuries, Ianto’s presentation will provide an understanding of how vehicle structures and safety systems are designed to manage and absorb the transfer of energy away from the human body thus reducing potentially fatal injuries. In addition, a brief overview of the current regulations and the impact of consumer advice has had on the design of vehicles and what we can expect from the future.

Ianto’s is fortunate enough to have a duel role, not only is he an operational paramedic but his work within TRL has given him a wealth of experience within road traffic collision investigation. Most recently Ianto was an author involved in drafting the latest set of type approval regulations for road vehicles within the EU - known as the General Safety Regulations, which will introduce a wide variety of new safety measure intended to prevent collisions from occurring in the first place.

The second session will be taking place on 26th August and will be Assessing and understanding the forces behind specific injuries, presented by Ana Barbir. Please see the separate event listing if you would like to register to attend this event as well.
