Michael is the Mental Health Coordinator for the National Police Chiefs Council and the College of Policing, seconded from West Midlands Police. He has worked on mental health in policing for over a decade, driving the creation of ‘Place of Safety’ services which have spared thousands of people the indignity of detention in custody and writing the recently published national guidelines on policing and mental health. His social media use has been nationally and internationally award-winning and he was highlighted for commendation by the Home Affairs Committee inquiry into policing and mental health. He is a recipient of the President’s Medal from the Royal College of Psychiatrists for his significant contribution to improving the lives of people with mental illness and in 2016 was appointed an OBE in the 90th Birthday Honours.
