Nazir Afzal OBE, Chancellor of University of Manchester, Independent Consultant
Nazir Afzal OBE, was Chief Crown Prosecutor for NW England and formerly Director in London. He was Chief Executive of the country’s Police & Crime Commissioners and most recently, National Adviser to the Welsh Government. During a 30-year career, has prosecuted the most high-profile cases in the country & advised on many others and led nationally on several legal topics including Violence against Women & Girls, child sexual abuse, and honour-based violence. He had responsibility for more than 100,000 prosecutions each year. His prosecutions of the so-called Rochdale grooming gang and hundreds of others were groundbreaking and changed the landscape of child protection. He is now the first independent chair of the Catholic Church Safeguarding Standards Agency which is regulating the protection of the most vulnerable from clerical abuse. Meanwhile, he has written and published two successful books, one a memoir and the other an examination of the experiences of leaders of colour in the country. His independent review of the culture of London Fire Brigade last year proved to be a reckoning for all blue light services nationally & he remains engaged in improvement initiatives trying to make the workplace safer. He is undertaking an independent review of the culture of the Nursing & Midwifery Council.He is tutor of several Leadership programmes in the Public and Private Sector, and he is patron of 9 charities, all women led, that work to improve public safety. A trustee of several charities, Nazir is passionate about the most vulnerable, and his passion only drives him to strive for wholesale change. He is their ambassador delivering confidence and transformation.
